Local youths are encouraged to join the local scouting troop to build leadership and life skills and make lasting friendships. Troop 207 in Hancock is actively seeking new members to join the last remaining troop in the Copper Country.
Scoutmaster of Troop 207 James Bittner reveals that there used to be several scouting units across the region, but it has been reduced in recent years to just the sole remaining troop in Hancock. Scouts are able to practice skills that may not otherwise be developed in a standard school curriculum in an environment where experiential learning is valued.
In addition, due to the membership of Troop 207 being on the younger side, newer recruits have the opportunity to advance to leadership roles more swiftly than in a more populous area. “Our oldest active members are entering their freshman year of high school, and so that’s kind of odd for a scout troop to be so young and to be giing leadership opportunities to new members really quick,” explains Bittner.
