Volunteers from across the nation helped the United States Forest Service with projects that needed to be done last Saturday on National Public Lands Day. The USFS says that as summer turns to fall, volunteering your time to help improve public land is a worthwhile endeavor for you and your fellow citizens.
The United States is home to a vast area of forests that are managed by the federal government as a valuable natural resource– these lands extend across all 50 states, including a sizable portion of Michigan. Many of these sites need regular maintenance or cleaning to preserve their splendor and natural health, and with limited time and resources, the US Department of Agriculture and US Forest Service are asking interested members of the public to volunteer their time to assist with these endeavors.
Maintaining these areas routinely ensures the forests can be a foundation for clean water, stable soil, abundant wildlife, and of course, unparalleled natural splendor. The Forest Service states that the volunteers need not have any specialized skills or equipment to participate in the program, they only need to show up.
