High School
On last night’s high school football schedule…
- Houghton fell to Menominee 45-16.
- Calumet dropped a 37-19 homecoming decision to unbeaten Kingsford. The Flivvers scored on every drive except for a one-play possession at the end of the first half, and two kneel-downs at the end of the game. The Kings went three-and-out on their first two drives, but got on the board with a 30-yard Keith Koivisto touchdown run midway through the second quarter. A 31-yard Ty Halonen-to-Andrew Juntilla touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the first half narrowed Kingsford’s halftime lead to 21-13. After holding the Flivvers to a 27-yard Brock Flaminio field goal on the opening drive of the second half, Halonen broke loose for a 68-yard TD run to bring the Kings to within five points, but Kingsford added two touchdowns to put the game away.
- Hancock’s three-game winning streak ended with a 40-0 loss to Negaunee.
- L’Anse celebrated homecoming with a 53-14 win over Gwinn.
- Ontonagon lost to Norway 40-16.
- Forest Park outscored North Dickinson 59-52.

On the volleyball schedule last night…
- Baraga remained unbeaten with a very tight 3-0 (30-28, 26-24, 25-18) win at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. For the Blue Bolts, Kiya Kemppainen stepped in as setter for the injured Sylvie Kentala. She ended the night with 22 assists, 1 setter kill, and 22 digs. Laila Bell led all hitters with 11 kills. Haley Pakkala came in hot at the service line with 13 points and 3 aces. Ellie Keranen led the defense with 36 digs.
The Houghton boys soccer team plays at Escanaba Bayside today.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team lost 3-0 at Saginaw Valley State yesterday, and plays at Ferris State tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.
The Northern Michigan women’s soccer team played unbeaten Wayne State to a 1-1 tie yesterday, and plays at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.
The Northern men’s squad tied Roosevelt University 1-1 yesterday. The Wildcats play at Saint Cloud State tomorrow.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Wayne State 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 26-24) last evening. Rachel Zurek had 18 kills, Madelynn Kreider 38 assists, and Amelia Albers 13 digs, including the 1,000th of her career.
The Northern Michigan volleyball team visits Grand Valley State this afternoon.
College Football
Both the Michigan Tech and Northern football teams have this weekend off.
MLB
The Tigers held off the Pirates 8-7 last night. Jackson Jobe pitched into the sixth, gave up two runs, and struck out eight. Detroit built a big lead with help from Spencer Torkelson, who had three hits, including a triple and a home run, and drove in three runs. Pittsburgh narrowed the gap with five runs off Andrew Sears in the top of the eighth, but Tyler Holton came in to snuff out the rally, and Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth to earn his 22nd save.
The Tigers host the Pirates again this afternoon. Justin Verlander will return from the injured list to make the final start of his career against Kirby Yates. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers stopped the Cardinals 8-4 last evening, breaking a tie with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Those teams play in Milwaukee again tonight. Dustin May will pitch against Quinn Mathews.
The Brewers have placed Andrew Vaughn on the injured list because of an illness. Brandon Lockridge has been called up to fill in. Milwaukee also brought pitcher Bryse Wilson off the injured list, and designated pitcher Lyon Richardson for assignment.

The Lions host the Jets in a 1:00 game tomorrow.

The Red Wings host the Blue Jackets for their final preseason game tonight.
