As the Autumnal Equinox passes us, and the mornings become chilly, it’s becoming clear that Fall is once again here in the Keweenaw. The first inklings of color in the foliage are starting to show, and soon the Copper Country will be awash in reds, yellows, and oranges– visitors from across the globe flock to the area to be amazed by the unparalleled autumnal splendor.
Historically reaching a peak in color around early-to-mid October, the seasonal change is already visible in the southern part of the Keweenaw. Though there are only flecks of warm tones in the northern and central Keweenaw, the progress moves quickly, so those who seek to view the colors should maintain a close watch from week-to-week.
There are many popular spots to observe vistas with the famous colors; some popular places include Brockway Mountain Drive in Copper Harbor, Covered Road near Liminga, and the stretch of M-26 on the scenic shores of Lake Superior near Eagle River. In order to assist Fall color enthusiasts, Visit Keweenaw has set up a regularly-updated Fall Color Report on their website, which includes information on the progress of the changes in different locations across the Copper Country.
To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Visit Keweenaw is also hosting the Canal Colors Festival from Oct. 1-4 in downtown Houghton. Featuring many Fall Fest favorites, more information can be found on Visit Keweenaw’s website.
