High School
In high school volleyball last night…
- Houghton defeated Marquette 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 15-4).
- Calumet swept Ishpeming 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-19).
- Hancock blanked West Iron County 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-14).
- Lake Linden-Hubbell breezed past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16). For the Blue Bolts, Hannah Keranen had 8 kills and 1 block. Laila Bell had 4 kills and 2 blocks. Kiya Kemppainen had 19 digs and 8 assists. Ellie Keranen followed with 8 digs and stayed strong on the service line with 8 service points including 2 aces.
- Baraga outfought Jeffers 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 24-26, 25-13, 15-12). Taylee Rajala had 12 kills for the Jets, and Aya Keteri had 22 digs and 2 aces.
- L’Anse lost to Ironwood 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16).
- Ewen-Trout Creek swept Chassell 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19). For Chassell, Elli Kuntze had 15 kills, 1 block, 3 aces and 12 digs. Oriana Olson had 4 kills, 3 aces, and 7 digs. Sylvia Aho had 1 kill, 17 assists, 3 aces and 8 digs.
- Ontonagon downed Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-15).

Citing low numbers and injuries, West Iron County has folded its high school football team for the season.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 10-15) at Northern Michigan last night. Rachel Zurek had 24 kills, and Madelynn Kreider had 52 assists and 19 digs for the Huskies. Kayla McIntosh led the Wildcats with 28 kills. Allie Barlow notched 61 assists, and Liesl Haugen had 16 digs.
MLB
The Tigers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Nationals last night. Drew Anderson gave up one run over six innings, but left as the Nats added two more in the seventh, and took the loss. Detroit’s only run came in the bottom of the sixth, when Ben Malgeri scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Tigers host the Nationals again this afternoon. Framber Valdez will start against Richard Lovelady. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has confirmed that Justin Verlander will start Saturday’s game. Verlander returned to Detroit as a free agent for the final season of what will certainly be a Hall of Fame career, but spent almost the entire summer on the injured list.
The Brewers fell 6-4 to the Phillies last night. Milwaukee starter Dustin May allowed two runs in the second, and didn’t return for the third. Philadelphia broke a 3-3 tie with three runs off Colton Gordon in the bottom of the eighth.
The Brewers continue that series in Philadelphia this evening. Locan Henderson will pitch against Aaron Nola.
NHL
The Red Wings bombed the Penguins 7-4 in a preseason contest last night. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard scored two goals. Anton Johansson had four assists. John Gibson gave up two goals over two periods. Trey Augustine allowed two over one period.
The Wings have today off, and host the Sabers in a preseason contest tomorrow night.
NFL
The Packers have lost tackle Zach Bako-Bewele for the season. He’ll undergo surgery to repair a tendon in his knee. Receiver Jayden Reed is back with the team after being hospitalized for a neck injury during Sunday’s game. He’s still being evaluated, and it’s not known when he might be able to play again.
Green Bay will host the Falcons for tomorrow night’s game. Atlanta has announced that Michael Penix, Jr. will make his first start at quarterback since suffering a knee injury last season.
