As harvest season approaches the Copper Country, gardeners can get a head start on next year’s crops at the Upper Peninsula Smart Gardening Conference.
MSU Extension programs in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University host the event September 12, bringing regional gardeners together to learn about creating productive home gardens.
The full-day conference begins at 8 a.m. and covers fall preparation strategies for spring planting beds. Sessions explore building healthy soils, avoiding invasive species, and using natural remedies to protect plants.
Attendees will also learn rainwater collection methods and how climate change affects garden growth in the Upper Peninsula—critical knowledge for local growers adapting to shifting growing conditions.
“Planning a productive garden takes time,” organizers note, making fall preparation essential for spring success.
