In high school volleyball last night…
- Houghton swept Gwinn 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-19). Annika Henquinet had 6 kills and 13 digs; Lydia Williams 8 kills and 10 digs; Alyssa Northey 24 assists, 15 digs and 2 aces; and Katia Rudak 16 digs and 2 aces.
At the season-opening Jeffers Cross Country Invitational at the Kilpela Farm yesterday…
The Jets boys claimed the team title, followed by Houghton, the Copper Island Academy and Ironwood. Four Jets finished in the top-10, led by Branson Anderson with a third-place finish. Brandon Van Carson from Houghton medaled.
Houghton won the girls team title, with four runners in the top eight. Holly Cooke of the Gremlins medaled. L’Anse finished second, followed by Jeffers, Ewen-Trout Creek, Hancock, Calumet and Ironwood.

The high school football season opens tonight…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell will host Ishpeming. Coverage will begin at 4:40 ahead of a 5:00 kickoff on the Voice of the Lakes, KBear 102.3. That game will be played at Kearly Stadium at Michigan Tech. Warner Field in Lake Linden was re-seeded this summer, and is not yet ready for use.
- Hancock travels to Iron Mountain. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Bulldogs, Lite 96.3 Houghton’s Breeze.
- L’Anse entertains West Iron County. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of Iron County Sports, 99.1 WIKB.
- The Copper Island Academy will play its inaugural game at Brimley.
In football tomorrow…
- Houghton opens its season at Calumet. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. It’s the first of two meetings between the Gremlins and Kings this season.
- Forest Park journeys to Ontonagon. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of Iron County Sports, 99.1 WIKB.

Six new members will be inducted into the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.
This year’s class includes:
- Leah (Kiilunen) Bjorn, who earned 10 letters in cross country (4), basketball (2), track (3), and softball (1) from 2012-2016. She was a member of the 2015 state champion girls basketball team, and received numerous awards and honors for cross country and track.
- Kevin Langseth, who earned eight letters in football (2), hockey (3), and track from 1977-1981, and went on to a long and distinguished career as a hockey official, including refereeing four NCAA championship games.
- Clara (Loukus) Pietila, who earned nine letters in volleyball (2), basketball (4), and softball from 2012-2016. Clara helped lead the Copper Kings to the MHSAA Class C State Championship as a junior. She went on to play at Mid-Michigan Community College. She holds several school softball team records.
- Lori (Loukus) Anderson, who earned seven letters in volleyball (3), basketball (3), and track (1) from 1990-1994. She owns a number of girls basketball team records, and is the school’s all-time leading girls scorer.
- Corey Niemela, who earned 11 letters in football (3), basketball (4), and track (4) from 1993-1997, and received numerous statewide football honors.
- Andy Storm, who earned eight letters in football (3), basketball (3), and track (2) from 1992-1996, and went on to earn four varsity football letters at Michigan Tech.
The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 12th at 11:00 in the CLK School Commons. Honorees will be saluted at the football game on September 11th.

The Michigan Tech football team opens its season tonight at Bemidji State.
Northern Michigan kicks off its season at Moorhead State.
College Volleyball
Both the Michigan Tech and Northern volleyball teams begin their campaigns at the UP North Tournament in Marquette.
- The Huskies will face Minnesota Duluth today at 5:00, Saint Cloud State tomorrow at 2:00, Cal State East Bay Saturday morning at 9:00, and Winona State Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
- The Wildcats will take on Winona State this afternoon at 2:30, Saint Cloud State this evening at 6:30, Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at 7:00, and Tiffin Saturday at 4:30.
College Soccer
- The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team begins its season tonight at Northwood in Midland.
MLB
The Tigers’ late-season fade continued with a quiet 3-0 loss to the Rays yesterday. Detroit was held to just two hits. Troy Melton took the tough loss, allowing three runs over seven innings.
The Tigers have today off, and begin a home set against the Dodgers tomorrow. Drew Anderson will start against Tarik Skubal. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Ricky Vanasco is no longer with the Tigers. He was claimed off waivers by the Braves.
The Brewers clobbered the Mets 8-1 last night. Starter Dustin May left the game after his first pitch was lined right back at him, and hit him on the back. He’s bruised, but otherwise okay. Robert Gasser relieved him, and earned the win. Brice Turang homered.
The Brewers continue that series in New York tonight. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Sean Manaea.

Leah Kiilunen Bjorn – Leah earned 10 letters in Cross Country (4), Basketball (2), Track (3), and Softball (1) while attending Calumet High School from 2012-2016. In Cross Country, she was named to the All-Conference 1st Team, the All-UP 1st Team, and All-State 1st Team as a freshman (2012). Leah was named to the AllConference 1st Team, All-UP 1st Team, and All-State 1st Team as a sophomore (2013). She was named to the All-Conference 1st Team, was Conference MVP, and was All-UP 1st Team as a junior (2014). Leah was named to the All-Conference 1st Team, and the All-UP 1st Team as a senior (2015). In basketball, she was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention Team as a junior (2015). Leah helped lead her team to the MHSAA Class C State Championship as a junior, defeating Flint Hamady 57-49 (2015). She was named to the All-Conference 1st Team, and All-UP2nd Team as a senior (2016). In track, Leah was named Conference Distance MVP as a freshman (2013). She earned All-State honors 6 times based on results at the MHSAA UP Finals: 1600M Run 3rd Place (2013), 3200M Run 5th Place (2013), 1600M Run 5th Place (2014), 3200M Run 5th Place (2014), 800M Run 6th Place (2015), and 1600M Run 6th Place (2015).
Kevin Langseth – Earned 8 letters in Football (2), Hockey (3), and Track (3) while attending Calumet High School from 1977-1981. In football, Kevin was named to the Superior Six All-Conference 2nd Team as a Junior (1979). He helped lead his team to back-to-back conference championships (1979 and 1980). In hockey, Kevin was named to the Lake Superior All-Conference 2nd Team as a Junior (1980). He was named to the Lake Superior All-Conference 1st Team as a Senior (1981). Kevin was named Lake Superior Conference Player of the Year as a Senior (1981). As an on-ice official, he officiated MHSAA hockey games for 25 years, including multiple MHSAA state finals and championship games, and served on the MHSAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee and Officials Selection Committee. Kevin served 13 years on the Michigan Officiating Instruction Staff for USA Hockey. He worked over 800 NCAA games as a Division 1 official in the CCHA, WCHA, and Big 10 Conferences over a 30-year career. Kevin officiated in 19 NCAA Tournaments, including 8 consecutive NCAA Frozen Four Championships (2000-2007), 4 NCAA Semi-Final games, and 4 NCAA National Championship games. He was selected to officiate the first-ever outdoor college game also known as The Cold War between Michigan and Michigan State in Spartan Stadium (2001) in front of 74,544 fans. Kevin officiated several seasons of NHL training camp and tryouts for the Detroit Red Wings. He officiated minor professional hockey for 6 seasons in the Colonial Hockey League and United Hockey League, earning playoff assignments every year. Kevin served as an Assistant Supervisor of Officials for the WCHA (2018-2020), and Director of Officiating for the CCHA (2021-2023).
Clara Loukus Pietila – Earned 9 letters in Volleyball (2), Basketball (4), and Softball (3) while attending Calumet High School from 2012-2016. In volleyball, Clara was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as a senior (2015). In basketball, she was named to the All-Conference 2nd Team as a sophomore (2014). Clara was named to the All-UP Class ABC Honorable Mention Team as a sophomore (2014). She set what was then a school record for most 3-point field goals in a game (7) against Jeffers (2014). Clara was named to the All-Conference 2nd Team as a Junior (2015). She was named to the All-UP Class ABC 2nd Team as a Junior (2015). Clara helped lead her team to the MHSAA Class C State Championship as a junior, defeating Flint Hamady 57-49 (2015), where she led Calumet in scoring in the semi-final game against Laingsburg and made two free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining to seal the win. She was named WestPAC MVP as a senior (2016). Clara was named to the All-UP Dream Team as a senior (2016). She was named to the Associated Press Class C All-State 1st Team, Detroit News All-State 2nd Team, and Detroit Free Press All-State 3rd Team as a senior (2016). Clara earned Academic All-State honors from BCAM as a senior (2016). In softball, she was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as a sophomore (2014). Clara was named WestPAC MVP as a Junior (2015). She was named to the All-Conference 1st team as a senior (2016). Clara holds the following school records in softball at the time of induction: Runs in a Game (4), Singles in a Game (4), and is second in Career Singles (76) and Career Runs (115). She received the Holly Jean McCullah Award, as the outstanding senior female athlete (2016). Clara went on to play college basketball at Mid-Michigan Community College where she played in 52 games and averaged 10.4 points per game (2016-2018).
Lori Loukus Anderson – Earned 7 letters in Volleyball (3), Basketball (3), and Track (1) while attending Calumet High School from 1990-1994. In basketball, Lori was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as a sophomore (1991). She was named conference MVP as a sophomore (1991). Lori was named to the All-UP Class ABC Team as a sophomore (1991). She was named to the Class C All-State Team as a sophomore (1991). Lori was named to the All-Conference 1st team as a junior (1992). She was named to the All-UP Class ABC Team as a junior (1992). Lori was named to the All-Conference 1st team as a senior (1993). She was named to the All-UP Class ABC Team as a senior (1993). Lori holds the following school records at the time of induction: Points per Game (48) 1991, Points in a Season (484) 1991, Field Goals in a Game (22) 1991, Field Goals in a Season (195) 1991, Free Throws in a Season (137) 1992, Free Throws in a Career (235) 1991-1993, Field Goal Percentage in a Season (58%) 1991, Field Goal Percentage in a Career (47%) 1991-1993, and is the All-Time Leading Scorer in CHS Girls Basketball history with 1154 Points in a Career (1991-1993).
Corey Niemela – Earned 11 letters in Football (3), Basketball (4), and Track (4) while attending Calumet High School from 1993-1997. In football, he was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as an offensive lineman as a junior (1995).Corey was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as an offensive lineman as a junior (1996). He was named to the All-UP Dream Team as an offensive tackle as a senior (1996). Corey was named to the Detroit Free Press All-State Team as an offensive lineman as a senior (1996). He was named to the Detroit News All-State Team as an offensive lineman as a senior (1996). Corey served as team captain his senior year (1996). He was selected as 1 of 5 Upper Peninsula players out of a total of 88 players statewide to participate in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association East-West All-Star Statewide Football Game at Spartan Stadium, Michigan State University (1996). Corey was recruited to continue his football career at Michigan Tech and Central Michigan University. In basketball, he served as team captain his senior year (1996). Corey received the George Gipp All-American Award, as the outstanding senior male athlete (1997).
Andy Storm – Earned 8 letters in Football (3), Basketball (3), and Track (2) while attending Calumet High School from 1992-1996. In football, he was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as a senior (1995). Andy was named to the All-UP Honorable Mention Team as a senior (1995). As a senior, he recorded 74 tackles and 12 sacks (1995). In basketball, he was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as a junior (1995). Andy was named to the All-Conference 1st Team as a senior(1996). He set the school record for most Rebounds in a Career as a senior with 641 (1996). This record stands at the time of induction. In track, Andy earned All-State honors in the shot put as a senior (1996). He was recruited to play football at Michigan Tech, where he played in 40 games, and earned 4 varsity letters (1996-2000). Andy was selected to the GLIAC All-Conference 2nd Team as a Defensive Tackle (1999). He was also selected to the GLIAC All-Conference 2nd Team as a Defensive Tackle (2000). Andy finished his MTU Football career with 10 sacks, placing him number 14 on the all-time sack leader list.
