MLB
The Tigers lost to the Royals 3-1 Saturday. Drew Anderson pitched into the sixth, and was charged with all three Kansas City runs. Hao-Yu Lee’s fifth-inning homer was one of just three Detroit hits.
After the early August surge that nearly pushed them into first place in the American League Central Division, the Tigers have lost six of their last seven games and have dropped back to fourth place, six games behind the White Sox.
The Tigers will visit the Royals again today. Detroit has not named a starter. Daniel Lynch IV will open for K.C. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers are expected to add lefty reliever prospect Andrew Sears to their roster today. Sears is Detroit’s 14th-ranked prospect, but has impressed this season, first at West Michigan, then at Erie, and most recently with Toledo.
The Brewers stopped the Braves 4-1 Saturday. Jake Bauers’ two-run homer in the third inning was the big blow. Logan Henderson surrendered a run in the first inning, then cruised through the sixth to earn the win.
The Brewers and Braves travel to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the annual Little League Classic game tonight. Shane Drohan will pitch against Tyler Mahle.
Milwaukee pitcher Brandon Woodruff says he will not need major shoulder surgery, after all. Woodruff has been on the injured list since early July. The initial prognosis was that he would need a repeat of the procedure that required a season-and-a-half to rehab. The doctor who performed that operation says that another one won’t be needed. Woodruff has begun throwing, and there’s a chance he could return late this season.
NFL
The Lions outscored the Commanders 17-13 in a preseason contest yesterday. New backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs opened the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown run. He also completed seven of 12 passes for 74 yards. Trayveon Williams added a one-yard TD run, and Jake Bates kicked a 37-yard field goal.
