MLB
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the 10th, and held off the Cubs 8-6 last evening. Detroit got off to a quick start, as Riley Greene hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Dillon Dingler followed with a solo shot. Jack Flaherty struggled through four innings, allowing three runs on a pair of homers in the third. Dingler added another solo home run in the top of the eighth, but Ian Happ’s two-run shot off Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the inning tied the game. Dingler’s RBI single in the top of the 10th reestablished the lead, and Spencer Torkelson’s two-run single provided the winning margin. Chicago got one back off Tyler Holton in the bottom of the 10th, but Holton was able to close it out for his first save of the season.
The Tigers visit the Cubs again tonight. Framber Valdez will start against David Peterson. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit starter Casey Mize did some throwing yesterday, and said he felt fine. Mize left Sunday’s game early after he was hit on the wrist by a batted ball, and felt some tightness in the groin muscle that’s been giving him problems for weeks. At this point, he’s expected to be ready for his next start.
Gleyber Torres returned from the injured list last evening, and had two hits. To open a roster spot, Eduardo Valencia was sent back to Toledo. Javier Báez may be on his way back. He’s been out since late April with a stubborn ankle sprain, but is set to begin a rehab stint with Detroit’s Lakeland farm team today.
The Brewers teed off on former teammate Freddy Peralta early, and pasted the Mets 8-3. The Crew scored five runs over the first three innings, then chased Peralta from the game with three more in the sixth. Cooper Pratt hit his first major league home run, and Andrew Vaughn and Joey Ortiz also went deep. Starter Jacob Misiorowski struck out six over four innings – he was pulled early because he’s been dealing with arm fatigue.
The Crew hosts the Mets again this evening. Brandon Sproat will pitch against Zac Thornton.
David Hamilton and Brandon Lockridge are expected to begin rehab stints with the Nashville Sounds tonight. Hamilton is recovering from a hamstring strain, and Lockridge from a knee laceration.
