NOTE: Canal Run Organizers plan to continue with the 51st annual race. However high volumes of wildfire smoke have forced the race to take precautions. As of noon on July 16th, 2026, Canal Run has posted a RED Event Alert System status. Similar to the gauge the National Weather Service uses to monitor air quality during fire events, the scale is optimized to consider conditions for outdoor activity. Keep an eye out for updates over the next 48 hours from the Canal Run facebook page.
The Keweenaw Peninsula’s largest running race returns this weekend as the 51st Canal Run kicks off Saturday, with participants arriving Friday night to pick up race information and register.
For more than 50 years, the Canal Run has been a staple of the Copper Country. This year, the event continues its tradition of supporting local causes, with proceeds benefiting the Hancock Trails Club.
“We’ve given over $40,000 back to the community, which is just awesome,” said Angela Luskin, race director for Canal Run. “This year for 2026, the recipient will be the Hancock Trails Club. They are a great match for the canal run. They’re promoting recreation activity, and they’re just a great partner for us, and we’re happy to give back to them this year.”
Race participants can pick up bibs and register as late sign-ups Friday night at the Quincy Green during Key Ingredients. The race officially begins Saturday.
Organizers note that detours will be in place along the course, but local law enforcement will assist residents who need to access their homes during the event.
“If residents that live along the course really need to get in or out of their residence, local law enforcement will help them do that,” Luskin said.
Volunteers are still needed to help at aid stations along the route. For more information about the 51st Canal Run, visit the event’s website.
