Isle Royale’s Ranger III has completed the first voyage to the island national park, dropping off staff ahead of the main visitor season.
Just before the opening of Isle Royale National Park, the National Park Service issued new guidelines for food storage. Isle Royale park managers will implement new regulations that will cover proper food storage, trash, scented items, cooking supplies, utensils, fish and fish parts.
Everyone visiting Isle Royale, by boat or foot, will need to use the food storage locker or an approved animal-proof container. Boaters will need to use the new equipment or lock items safely inside a locked boat cabin or compartment.
Those camping off trail should store food in approved containers or hang items from a tree at least 200 feet away from a campsite. Food hanging from trees is not allowed at designated campsites within the park.
The National Park Service has included with its announcement a list of approved animal-proof containers for visitors to check before arriving.
Never leave food unattended while visiting Isle Royale National Park and do not store food, trash or scented items in a tent or shelter.
