Rising temperatures, cool breezes and sunny days are drawing campers to the Upper Peninsula, prompting partial openings at popular destinations like Porcupine Mountains State Park.
While still too early for visitors to set up tents and campers at parks, some amenities have started to open as snow melts across the region.
The park provided an update on conditions last week. M-107 is open, but the final three-quarters of a mile to the Lake of the Clouds scenic lookout remains closed due to snow and ice. Visitors can park near the ranger booth and hike to the outlook from the gate.
South Boundary Road remains largely closed. A section of the road headed south from M-107 is open until Union Spring. The road is also open headed east from Presque Isle until the bridge.
The Union Bay Boat Launch and Presque Isle Recreation Area are open for day use. All campgrounds remain closed until May 15.
Visitors traveling to the Porkies can stop by the Headquarters Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. with questions. The Porcupine Mountains visitor center will officially open May 15.
