Copper Country school districts earned a portion of historic CTE program funding that will support programming across Michigan.
Last week the Michigan Department of Education announced plans to disperse a historic investment into career and technical training to support middle school manufacturing education. The Upper Peninsula’s school districts will receive more than $4 million of the $24.2 million in expansion grants awarded statewide.
Those awards include 14 school districts in the Upper Peninsula, with nearly half of the awards going to districts in the Copper Country.
Great Lakes Shipyard CEO Steve Mattson said these awards are great for students and great for local manufacturers. CTE Program Director Corey Soumis said the work between regional career education planning district administrators helped to access the grant awards.
Copper Island Academy will receive $287,000 for the middle school advanced manufacturing program. Hancock Public Schools also receives a grant award worth $273,000. Houghton-Portage Township will earn a $177,000 award. CLK Schools will work with $400,000, while L’Anse Area Schools will work with $232,000.
Gogebic-Ontonagon ISD earned an award worth $400,000.
