While some families prepare to host graduation parties, others have started preparing their children for academic success through early education programs.
CCISD Director of Early Childhood Development Jennifer Beaudette said families in the Keweenaw Peninsula have a variety of early education options to choose from, including the Great Start Readiness pre-school programs. The structured preschool programs help children develop essential skills for kindergarten readiness, including understanding daily routines, social interaction with peers and building independence through self-help skills.
“Many of our GSRP classrooms are four days a week. So that fifth day, depending on family schedules, you know, in a school schedule, what works best for them,” Beaudette said. “The benefits of being in a structured preschool program are really children understanding the schedule of a routine, being with friends, and also learning those self-help skills that are so essential as they get into kindergarten, which is more independent.”
Beaudette said families registering their child for pre-school or kindergarten will need several documents. Those documents include proof of birth record and residency. Preschool registration for GSRP programs will need proof of income. Parents also must provide an immunization record or waiver from the local health department.
Those interested in learning more about registering their child for preschool or kindergarten can find more information online. Most registration windows for Pre-school programs in the Copper Country will open on Thursday. Kindergarten registration for school districts in the area have also started.
