Houghton and Calumet will play for the regional hockey title.
The Copper Kings shaded Jeffers 4-3 in yesterday’s first regional semifinal at the SDC. Drake Niemela opened the scoring for Calumet with a goal midway through the first quarter. Brogan Turner responded for the Jets just 19 seconds later. A late tally by Luke Hamlin gave Calumet a 2-1 lead going into the second frame. After Ben Anderson added to the lead, Max Nordstrom got one back for Jeffers. With four minutes remaining in the second, Erik Loukus’ short-handed score became the eventual game-winner. Turner’s second goal of the night on a power play midway through the third period narrowed the gap, but the Kings held on for the win. Beau Jukuri got the win in net, as Jeffers outshot Calumet 26-21. The Jets conclude a fine season as champions of the Great Lakes Hockey Conference, with a record of 19-8-1.
Houghton avenged their Wing Ding loss to Hancock by blanking the Bulldogs 5-0 in yesterday’s second semifinal. Brody Donnelly scored the Gremlins’ first three goals over the first two periods. Braden Kari and Gunner Gullstrand added insurance tallies in the third period. Cooper Flachs earned the shutout in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Bulldogs 36-16, including a 16-3 advantage in the first period. Hancock closes its season with a record of 14-11-3.
