High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton earned a split in its weekend series against Marquette with a 6-0 victory. The Houghton defense limited the Sentinels to just 12 shots on goalie Cooper Flachs. The Gremlins assaulted Marquette goalie Parker Nevenhoven with 40 shots. Noah Maillette had a hat trick, Connor Arko added two goals and two assists, and Braden Kari got one goal.
- Calumet edged Hancock 2-1 in the finale of the Copper Island Classic. The Kings built a 2-0 lead with goals from Luke Hamlin and Kaden Cronenworth. Connor Helminen got one back for the Bulldogs late in the second period, but Calumet held on for the win. Beau Jukuri stopped 17 shots to earn the win. Adam Mikkola turned away 25 shots for Hancock. The Copper Kings took game one of the classic 5-1 on Friday, and retained the John H. Sherf trophy with a 7-2 margin in the total-goals series.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey fell 2-1 to Saint Thomas Saturday night. Kalem Parker’s goal in the opening minute of the second period gave the Huskies a brief lead, but the Tommies responded with two tallies midway through the period to take the lead. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 26 saves.
The NMU hockey squad lost 3-2 to 14th-ranked Minnesota State Saturday evening. Michael Burchill and Grayden Slipec scored for the Wildcats. William Gramme stopped 33 shots, but took the loss as NMU remained winless this season.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 78-54 decision at Winona State Saturday. Soraya Timms led the Huskies with 13 points.
The 12th-ranked Tech men’s team dispatched Lakeland 92-56 in their home opener Saturday. Twelve Huskies scored, led by Ty Fernholz with 16 points.
The Northern Michigan women’s team shut down Minnesota-Crookston 89-57 Saturday. Jacy Wiesbrod scored 29 for the Wildcats, tying her career single-game high. Those teams meet again this afternoon at 1:00 in Crookston.
The Northern men’s basketball team smothered Minnesota-Duluth 79-53 Saturday. Dylan Kuehl paced the Wildcats with 17 points.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped their fourth straight game Saturday, falling 3-2 to the Bruins in a shootout. Lucas Raymond scored early for Detroit, and Machael Rasmussen forced overtime with a late third-period tally. Cam Talbot stopped 17 shots, and took the loss.
The Wings will host the Bruins Tuesday, with coverage at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
Daniss Jenkins sank two late free throws to seal the Pistons’ 138-135 victory over the Heat Saturday night. Cade Cunningham scored 29 for Detroit.
The Pistons host the Hawks Monday night.
The Bucks broke their seven-game losing streak with a 116-99 win over the Nets Saturday. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 29.
The Bucks will visit the Wizards Monday.
NFL
The Broncos visit the Commanders in the NFL Sunday Night contest, with coverage at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Patriots host the Giants in the Monday Night game, also broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
Reports of the death of Lions’ legend Lem Barney are not true. The Pro Football Hall of Fame released a statement memorializing him Saturday, but family members quickly countered it, and Hall officials have apologized. Barney is 80 years old, and is in frail health.
