A former Michigan Tech student will plead guilty to destroying a 9/11 memorial in September in Houghton County court.
Today, Avery Lawrence entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of the malicious destruction of a memorial. Lawrence was accused of throwing away close to 900 American flags set out as a part of the Michigan Technological University young Americans for freedom’s 9/11 memorial in September.
The misdemeanor’s charge for destruction of a memorial valued between 200 and 1000 dollars carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and or a fine up to 2,000 dollars or three times the value of the damage. Entering a guilty plea in 97th district court, Lawrence will waive her right to a trial. Tri-country public defenders attorney Joshua Makkonen requested Lawrence is placed in the Holmes youthful trainee probation program.
