The city of Houghton planning commission will consider zoning changes. Yesterday the city of Houghton posted a notice sharing the planning commission will begin consideing changes to zoning in order to allow construction of densor housing and developments. The first large parcel of land for consideration adjoins two properties owned by the Houghton Housing Commission.
The HHC would hope to convert the existing waterworks neighborhood, from r –1 single family zoning to r 3 multiple family zoning, consistent with historic and present uses. City manager Eric Waara adds while recent multifamily units have concentrated on student-residents, and overall single-family home prices have risen substantially, the city has many families seeking ways to live in Houghton. Sherry Hughes, executive director of the Houghton housing commission says the HHC wishes to partner with a developer to create duplex, or quadplex style units and add affordable housing stock in the area.
A second rezoning consideration by the Houghton Planning Commission involves a large city owned lot near east lakeshore drive by the Super 8 motel. Recommendation from the city council would consider rezoning the lot from RSV reserve to r-3 multifamily. Houghton Housing Quality has inquired about purchasing the lot from the city with the intent to develop up to eight four-unit condominiums. That project would require the city council to vote to sell the lot for the purpose of a project. The planning commission will hold public hearing for the rezoning on September 23rd at 5 30 pm.
