In high school volleyball last night…
- Calumet volleyball fell at Florence 3-1 (11-25, 23-25, 25-18, 16-25).
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Superior Central 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22). Sylvie Kentala had 17 assists. Kiera Isaacson had 10 kills, and Laila Bell added 5.
- Jeffers swept Westwood 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-12). Kylee Andrews led the team with 6 aces and 11 digs. Taylee Rajala and Mia Nordstrom each had 4 kills.
- West Iron County v Gwinn – no report.

The Houghton boys soccer team lost 3-1 to Marquette last night.
At the Hancock Bulldog Cross Country Invitational yesterday…
- Jeffers won the boys’ competition, with Houghton second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished fifth, and Hancock eighth. Cameron Anderson and Landon Larson of the Jets placed first and second. Houghton’s Benjamin Hemmer was third.
- Houghton took the girls’ competition, claiming five of the top 11 places. Calumet was second, followed by L’Anse and Hancock. Tessa Rautiola, Holly Cooke and Sela Niska of the Gremlins finished one-two-three.

Calumet holds fourth place in the 11-player division of the first Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters football poll of the fall. Escanaba earned the top spot. Menominee was second, and Negaunee third – the Copper Kings will visit them Friday, with the broadcast on KBear 102.3. Marquette rounds out the top five. Bark River-Harris and Kingsford earned honorable mentions.
In the eight-player poll, Pickford claimed the top spot, followed by Norway, Newberry, North Dickinson, and the Gogebic Miners. Saint Ignace and Forest Park received honorable mentions. Forest Park will play at North Dickinson on Friday, with the broadcast on 99.1 WIKB.
Houghton High School ski coach Larry Heathman has been named Boys Skiing Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Athletic Coaches Association.
Heathman will receive the honor at the organization’s annual award banquet in Midland on November 9th.
The award is based on team performance, along with the coach’s contributions to their sport, school and community.

The Tigers used a late surge to overpower the Yankees 12-2 last evening. After falling behind early, Detroit tied the contest with a Parker Meadows home run in the fifth, then blew the game open with nine runs in the seventh inning, kick-started by a Meadows RBI single, and boosted by a two-run Kerry Carpenter triple. In between, New York pitcher Mark Leiter walked in two runs, forced in another when he hit Colt Keith, and allowed yet another to score on a wild pitch. Casey Mize gave up two runs over six innings, and struck out eight. Chris Paddack pitched three perfect innings to earn his first career save.
The Tigers play in New York again tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Carlos Rodón. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Zach McKinstry was scratched from last night’s starting lineup with back stiffness. He’s considered day to day. Detroit reliever Bailey Horn has been granted paternity leave. Drew Sommers has been brought up to fill in.
The Brewers dropped their second straight game to the Rangers, 5-4, last evening. Chad Patrick started, and was relieved by Aaron Ashby as Texas scored four runs in the fifth inning. Jake Bauers homered.
The Brewers conclude that series at Texas this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Merrill Kelly.
Patrick was recalled from Nashville to make the start. Carlos Rodriguez was sent down. Rhys Hoskins returned from the injured list, and Anthony Seigler was returned to the Sounds.
