Houghton’s county fair has brought fun and entertainment to the community for more than 75 years. The fantastic event gets the community involved in a variety of ways, too. From volunteers taking ticket stubs at the front gate, or youth in the region saying goodbye to a cow or sheep. In preparation for the four-day festival, fair board members worked with the Copper Country ISD’s CTE program to build new tables.
We have over 200 volunteers, and we’re always looking for more volunteers who want to help. And we’re lucky that, you know, so many of our sponsors support us in so many ways. And one of the sponsors wanted more tables at our fair, so he gave us a donation, and the Intermediate School District students built these tables. They built a smaller ticket booth on the other end of the fair. And so everyone’s like so involved in it. It’s great to see that. – Debbie Winquist, President, Houghton County Fair Board
It takes a lot of dedication, people, and time to get ready for the Houghton County Fair. Skerbeck Entertainment was contacted months ago to confirm the carnival’s return. The fair board also found a third party to run the demolition derby’s return to the outdoor arena.
That’ll be on Friday night instead of Sunday afternoon like it used to be. And then we have on Sunday afternoon the Derby, car Derby. Thursday night is motocross. And then, of course, Saturday night is the monster trucks. So there’s, for those machine heads out there, there’s something with cars or motorcycles, all three, all four evenings. – Kathy Caspary, Board Member, Houghton County Fair Board
Another area of the county fair that requires some preparation work starts in the exhibitor barns. 4–H clubs and local youth register ahead of the fair for the livestock auction. And many residents will make sure to register in time for the exhibits.
We see it every year, so we want to do more the next year and have everything available to our community. – Kathy Caspary, Board Member, Houghton County Fair Board
And it’s so family-oriented. It’s just fun to see kids smiling and people coming in, and it’s a great way to end the summer. We’re looking forward to it. – Debbie Winquist, President, Houghton County Fair Board
