The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Phillies tonight. Jack Flaherty will pitch against Ranger Suárez. Coverage will begin at 6:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers also took yesterday off, and visit the Nationals this evening. Jose Quintana will pitch against Mitchell Parker.
It’s looking more and more likely that Milwaukee will need to play some games without Jackson Chourio. Chourio left Tuesday’s game after running out a triple. Initial reports called it a hamstring muscle spasm. Team officials are now saying he’ll likely spend some time on the injured list.
The Tigers added some pitchers before yesterday’s trade deadline:
- 41-year-old veteran starter Charlie Morton comes in from the Orioles. Morton got off to a tough start this season, but has gone 7-1 over his last 11 starts. Detroit gives up Double-A pitching prospect Micah Ashman, and gets some cash in the deal.
- Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan joins the team, in exchange for pitching prospects Josh Randall and R.J. Sales. Finnegan has 20 saves in 26 opportunities this season, but carries an ERA of 4.38.
- Veteran hurler Paul Sewald comes in from the Guardians in exchange for a player to be named later. Sewald has been on the injured list with a strained shoulder, but is eligible to return Sunday. He’s 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 games this season.
- Reliever Codi Heuer arrives from the Rangers in a cash deal. He’s been pitching for their Triple-A farm team, and will be assigned to Toledo.
- The team confirmed the trade for Braves’ reliever Rafael Montero in exchange for minor league shortstop Jim Jarvis.
To make roster room, the Tigers did some housecleaning. Pitcher Matt Manning was designated for assignment, then traded to the Phillies for a young outfielder. Reliever Carlos Hernández was designated for assignment and claimed by the Guardians. Dietrich Enns was designated for assignment, then sent to the Orioles for cash.
The Brewers beefed up their pitching options yesterday – sort of. They picked up reliever Shelby Miller and starter Jordan Montgomery from the Diamondbacks for a player to be named later and cash considerations. Miller has been Arizona’s closer intermittently, but missed the last month with a forearm injury. Projections are that he could begin rehabbing this month. Montgomery is recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, and won’t pitch this season. Milwaukee is taking on some of his contract obligation as part of the deal.
Milwaukee also added outfielder Brandon Lockridge from the Padres, in exchange for pitcher Nestor Cortes, minor league shortstop Jorge Quintana, and some cash. Cortes has been on the injured list much of the season, but just completed a rehab stint, and could join the San Diego starting rotation. Lockridge batted .216 with five RBI and eight steals in 47 games for the Padres.
The Brewers designated pitcher Elvis Peguero for assignment. Catcher Eric Haase has cleared waivers, and been assigned to Nashville.
