MLB
For the first time ever, the Major League All-Star game was decided in a tie-breaking home run swing-off last night, with the National League taking a 7-6 victory over the American League. The senior circuit got off to a quick start, scoring twice off Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal in the first inning. They added four more in the sixth, including one off Detroit’s Casey Mize. The American League responded with four runs in the seventh inning, then tied the game in the top of the ninth. That set the stage for the swing-off, in which Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber turned each of his allotted three swings into deep home runs.
Three Tigers started the game – Javier Báez, Riley Greene and Gleyber Torres. Zack McInstry made a late appearance as a pinch-hitter. None reached base. Brewers’ reliever Trevor Magill retired the only batter he faced to end the American League’s rally in the seventh inning. Celebrated Milwaukee rookie Jacob Misiorowski, who was named to the National League team after just five Major League appearances, pitched a scoreless eighth, with nine of his pitches exceeding 100 miles per hour.
The Tigers will return to the field Friday evening, when they visit the Rangers. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers’ season will resume Friday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
