While the Copper Country celebrates community, Washington D.C. celebrates an anniversary this weekend.
Washington D.C. and the nation celebrate the founding of the United States Army 250 years ago on Saturday. Throughout the parade servicemembers and military equipment will meet in the nation’s capital from across the country. Several tanks in the parade were transported from an army base in Texas, and service members will represent each era and conflict in which the army has fought.
Among the thousands of servicemembers in the parade is a young man from L’Anse. Hunter Stanaway graduated from L’Anse High School and entered military service. He serves as an active duty member in the 101st Airbourne division. Tomorrow he’ll march alongside other servicemembers wearing a Vietnam-era uniform. Stanaway’s father Cris says after the army’s anniversary his son will return home on leave for the Fourth of July. It will be the first time home in two years for Hunter. After his leave ends he plans to attend Ranger School. During the past year, Stanaway was deployed in Estonia to demonstrate the United States’ commitment to NATO and strengthen the collective Defense’s presence near the Russia-Ukraine war.
