College Hockey
Michigan Tech has a new head hockey coach. Bill Muckalt will return to the Copper Country next fall. He succeeds Joe Shawhan, who had led the Huskies since May 2017. In eight seasons, Shawhan compiled a record of 154-120-29. MTU Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret praised Shawhan’s “deep commitment” to the success of the program. The separation apparently came about because of a disagreement over the length of a potential contract extension.
Muckalt served as an assistant at Tech from 2011 to 2015 under head coach Mel Pearson. He spent last season as the head coach at Lindenwood University, finishing with a record of 8-22-2 in a program that was started from scratch in 2022.
He’ll be formally introduced to the community at a press conference Tuesday.
Muckalt’s assistant coach at Lindenwood, Benton Maass, will also join the staff at Michigan Tech.
