High School
The Jeffers hockey team’s landmark season ended with a tight 2-1 loss to the elite private Cranbrook Kingswood preparatory school in a Division Three state hockey tournament semifinal yesterday. Brit Heinonen scored the Jets’ only goal late in the opening period, with assists from Ethan Anderson and Griffin Heinonen. The Jets finish with a record of 24-5, closing out their most successful season in decades.
Another elite private academy, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep, mercied Alpena 9-1 in the earlier semifinal.
Cranbrook and St. Mary’s will meet for the Division Three title today at 3:00 in Plymouth.
In girls basketball district championship games last night…
- In Division Three – Calumet held off Ishpeming 51-43 to win their district title. The Copper Kings opened a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Calumet never trailed, but the Hematites came back to tie the contest in the fourth quarter. The Kings reestablished a narrow advantage, then sank eight straight free throws in the closing 90 seconds to secure the win. Jackie Kiilunen led all scorers with 21 points – 18 in the second half, including four of the down-the-stretch free throws. Jenessa Eagle scored 20 for the Hematites. Calumet (19-5) will face Menominee (9-15) in the regional semifinal Monday night at 7:00 at Escanaba High School. The Maroons advanced with a 59-44 victory over Iron Mountain. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- In Division Four – Hancock claimed the District 98 crown with a narrow 47-45 victory over L’Anse. Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Ontonagon 56-25. The Bulldogs and Panthers will meet in a regional semifinal Monday at 7:00 at Houghton High School.

Forest Park will face Bessemer in a boys regional final today at 1:00 at Lakeview Memorial Gym in Negaunee. The winner will play Pickford in a quarterfinal game Tuesday at Gladstone High School. The Panthers advanced with a 68-46 win over Harbor Springs Harbor Light Christian Thursday.
The Hancock Athletic Boosters will host their 22nd annual elementary school basketball tournament today and tomorrow, with games at the high school/middle school campus, and at Barkell Elementary. The tourney is a major fundraiser for the boosters, and the public is welcome.
Lake Linden-Hubbell multi-sport standout Emily Jokela closed out her high school basketball career with a flourish in the Lakes’ loss to L’Anse on Thursday. Jokela, the school’s all-time scoring leader, passed the 2,000 career-point mark, to finish at 2,010.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened the CCHA Mason Cup tournament with a 2-1 overtime loss at Bowling Green last night. The fifth-seeded Huskies and fourth-seeded Falcons play again tonight, with a third game tomorrow, if needed.
College Basketball
Michigan Tech will host the GLIAC men’s basketball tournament this weekend. The top-seeded Huskies will face Northern Michigan in the first semifinal today at noon. Lake Superior State will take on Ferris State in the second semifinal at 2:30. The title game will be played tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.
The GLIAC women’s tournament will conclude at Grand Valley State. The host Lakers will face Wayne State today. Northern will take on Ferris State. The title game will be played tomorrow.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines outscored the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 9-7 last evening. Dylan Boberg had a hat trick and two assists for the Wolves. Calumet travels to Mosinee for a game against the Papermakers tonight.
The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.
NHL
The Red Wings’ fade continued last night with a 5-2 loss to the Capitals. Washington broke the game open with four goals in the third period. Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider scored early for Detroit. Cam Talbot took the loss in net.
The Wings have dropped five straight, and visit the Senators Monday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Goaltender Petr Mrazek is back with the Red Wings. Before yesterday’s trade deadline, Detroit sent forward Joe Veleno to the Blackhawks. In exchange, the Wings get Mrazek and veteran forward Craig Smith.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Warriors tonight. Coverage will begin at 8:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks host the Magic this evening.
MLB
The Tigers outslugged the Orioles 11-7 yesterday. Keider Montero gave up four runs in the first inning, but two home runs by Spencer Torkelson helped the Bengals rebound. Gleyber Torres and Andrew Navigato also went deep.
The Tigers face the Orioles this afternoon. Jackson Jobe will start against Max Scherzer.
The Brewers’ game against the Padres yesterday was rained out. Milwaukee will face the Angels today. Elvin Rodriguez will pitch against Tyler Anderson.
Nordic Skiing
The U.P. Health System Great Bear Chase will be staged today at the Swedetown Trails. This year’s schedule includes a 50k and a new 20k skiathlon, 50k, 25k, and 10k freestyles and classics, and a new adaptive event. For details, click here. For results, click here.
