EGLE grants the Highland Copper Company an updated air permit for work continuing at the Copperwood Mine project. On Wednesday Highland Copper announced it has received approval for an updated air permit application from Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy. The updated air permit will replace a permit granted to the project in 2018.
Highland Copper states the new permit will provide the project flexibility to supplement incoming power from the main electricity supply with on-site generators when necessary, thus ensuring a reliable energy resource for the project’s operations. EGLE held public comment for the updated air permit in October 2024 and issued the updated version at the end of February.
Highland Copper CEO Barry O’Shea says the updated permit reflects a fair and thorough regulatory process within the state of Michigan, and underscores the Copperwood project has met rigorous standards to operate responsibly within the community. O’Shea added the company appreciates continued local and state support for the project.
Highland Copper commits to advancing the Copperwood mine project responsibly, in alignment with governmental regulations, best environmental practices, and community expectations.
