A new council means new roles for councilors. Last evening Houghton’s newest council met for the first time to determine its leadership. Former mayor Bob Backon was elected as mayor of the city council. Councilor Phillip Foltz was selected to fill the pro-tem position. He will fill in for Mayor Backon in the case of his absence. Mayor Backon has asked councilors to consider committee assignments before the council meets in December. At the final meeting in 2024, Backon will set committee assignments. Houghton’s city council will not meet again until December 11th, to work around the holiday season.
