Fire risk in the UP has been reported as high; local residents are urged to be careful when burning or working outside.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has stated that the recent risk has been caused by warm and dry weather combined with windy conditions.
“Grasses have dried out and leaves are starting to drop, which adds a layer of fuel that can feed and speed the spread of a wildfire,” said Paul Rogers, fire prevention specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “Make sure to check for a burn permit before you burn any yard debris and be careful of heat or sparks from equipment and off-road vehicles.”
The MDNR urges citizens to obtain a burn permit before performing any burning activity, always burn with a source of water nearby, and never leave a fire unattended.
If you see a wildfire happening, please call 911.
