Isle Royale National Park will open applications for commercial use authorizations this November, allowing tour operators, guides, and charter services to conduct business on the island park in 2027.
Between Nov. 1 and 30, commercial operations planning to provide tours, guide services, flights, or commercial trips must complete necessary paperwork with the National Park Service. Eligible activities include backcountry camping, guided hiking, environmental education, photography instruction, charter fishing, SCUBA and snorkeling tours, and more.
The park is transitioning to two-year commercial use agreements to create expanded opportunities for operators to participate in park activities.
“The park will continue to allow a limited number of charter fishing operations, to be issued based on relevant experience, operation history, ability to ensure visitor safety and protect park resources,” according to park officials.
Commercial operators providing water-based activities must carry $2 million in liability insurance. The National Park Service will evaluate applications based on applicant qualifications, safety protocols, and resource protection measures.
