Twilight League Baseball
Both of last night’s Copper Country Twilight Baseball League games were postponed because of poor air quality.
MLB
The Tigers resume their schedule tonight against the Angels in California. Troy Melton will start against Reid Detmers. Coverage will begin at 9:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers have locked in their first choice in the recent MLB Draft. Reports indicate that pitcher Cameron Flukey has signed for $3.8 million, slightly less than the slot value for that pick.
The Brewers entertain the Marlins this evening. Logan Henderson will pitch against Sandy Alcantara.
NBA
The NBA is investigating the Bucks’ new contract with Gary Trent, Jr. The four-year, $64 million deal sent shockwaves through the league because it represented a huge increase for the guard coming off a subpar season. The question is whether there was an arrangement to underpay Trent over the past couple of seasons while he established “early bird” status, which allows a player to re-sign with a team even if the team is over the salary cap. If the league determines that the team has inflated the new contract as a salary cap dodge, penalties could be assessed.
Hockey
The recently renovated Laird Township Ice Arena will be dedicated tomorrow. The ceremony will honor Edwin Tossava, who was the driving force behind the rink for many years. Activities between noon and 2:00 will include a potluck lunch, games, and comments from members of the Tossava family and the Laird Township Recreation Committee. The improvements were funded by a $106,395 grant from the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation, and include accessibility upgrades, resurfaced asphalt, and new windows and doors to better insulate the warming shack in all weather conditions. Officials say the improvements will open the rink up to year-round activities, such as a farmer’s market, rollerblading, basketball and more.
High School
The Houghton High School hockey reunion will take place tomorrow. Three alumni games separated by age groups featuring former Gremlins will begin at 1:00 at Dee Stadium. Admission to the games is free.
The L’Anse High School girls basketball team will hold a car wash tomorrow from noon until 5:00 at The Pines Convenience Center in Baraga. Donations to support the team are appreciated.
Canal Run
Online registration has ended for tomorrow’s Canal Run. Events include a half-marathon, 10k, 5k and 2k runs and walks, a kids dash, and adaptive races. An on-site registration session will take place today from 3:00 to 8:00 at Quincy Green. There will be no race day registration tomorrow.
