High School
At the U.P. Track and Field Finals held in Kingsford on Saturday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell won the boys Division III team title. Among local schools, L’Anse tied for ninth place. Baraga was 11th, Forest Park and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for 13th, Ontonagon tied for 17th, and Chassell tied for 19th place. Baraga’s Matthew Rinkinen won the 100-meter dash. Lukas Axford of the Lakes claimed the 400-meter sprint, and Tobin Baril won the pole vault.
- The Lake Linden-Hubbell girls finished second to Newberry in Division III. Forest Park placed fourth, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City seventh, Chassell ninth, Ontonagon 10th, Baraga 12th, and L’Anse 13th. Jordan Holombo from Chassell took the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Lake Linden-Hubbell won the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400-meter relays. Maddy Dudenas of the Lakes took the shot put. Kiera Isaacson of the Blue Bolts claimed the high jump, and Laila Bell won the long jump.
- Pickford claimed the Division II boys title. West Iron County placed fourth, Hancock ninth, Ewen-Trout Creek 10th, and Jeffers tied for 11th.
- Rudyard won the Division II girls crown. Ewen-Trout Creek finished third, West Iron County fourth, Hancock sixth and Jeffers 12th. Bristol Shampion from the Wykons won the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, and the high jump. Hancock’s Tatum Sporalski won the shot put, and the Bulldogs claimed the 4×400-meter relay. Ewen-Trout Creek won the 4×800, and Irelynd McGeshick of the Panthers won the discus throw.
- Marquette won the Division I boys championship. Houghton placed third, and Calumet 11th. Sam Roth of the Gremlins won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Michael Solena took the shot put and the discus throw.
- Negaunee took the Division I girls title. Houghton finished fourth, and Calumet eighth.

After district tournament play concluded Saturday, the pairings are set for the softball and baseball regionals.
The Division Four softball regional will be staged this coming Saturday at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. L’Anse will face Superior Central at noon, Hancock will take on Norway at 2:00, and the championship game will start at 4:00.
The Division Three softball regional is scheduled to take place this coming Saturday at Cheboygan, but geography is likely to force a change. Gladstone will play Traverse City Saint Francis at 10:00, Calumet will play Boyne City at noon, and the title game will start at 2:00.
Division Four baseball regional semifinals will be played Wednesday. Jeffers will play North Dickinson at Felch. Gaylord St. Mary is scheduled to face Mio in Bellaire, although that’s another location that could be changed because of geography. The regional final will be played Saturday at Rudyard.
Division Three baseball regional semifinals will also be staged on Wednesday. Hancock will play Menominee at Gladstone. Harrison will take on Manistee at Manistee. The regional final will be played Saturday at Gladstone.
NBA
The Spurs downed the Thunder 111-103 Saturday night, and claimed the Western Conference crown with a 4-3 series win. San Antonio will host the Knicks to open the league championship series Wednesday.
MLB
The Tigers’ struggles continued with a 7-1 loss to the White Sox Saturday. Framber Valdez gave up two runs in the first, and two more before leaving the game in the seventh. Beau Brieske surrendered three runs in the eighth. Wenceel Pérez homered for Detroit.
The Tigers have lost 19 of their last 23, and visit the White Sox again this afternoon. Keider Montero will start against Sean Burke. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers’ four-game win streak ended with a 9-2 loss to the Astros. Brandon Sproat struggled into the fifth inning, and was charged with five runs.
The Brewers visit the Astros again this afternoon. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Tatsuya Imai.
