High School
At the Bostwick Memorial baseball tourney at Houghton on Saturday…
- Hancock defeated Calumet 5-1. Ben Keranen had three hits, including a double and a triple. He also earned the win on the mound, allowing a run on two hits over six innings, and striking out seven.
- Jeffers blanked Houghton 2-0. Kasen Helminen and Pierce Johnson combined to throw a no-hitter for the Jets. Johnson got the win.
- Hancock shut down Jeffers 12-1. Keranen had three more hits, drove in two runs, and scored twice. Caleb Isaacson had two hits, and drove in three runs. He also earned the win, giving up a run on four hits over five innings, and striking out nine. Jeffers collected just three hits, including a double by Johnson.
In softball at Houghton…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Jeffers 11-6. Payton Goldsworthy had three hits and drove in three runs for the Lakes. She struck out 13 to earn the win in the circle. Naomi Frahm had a double and two RBI for the Jets, and Elli Kuntze had a triple and two RBI.
- Houghton lost to Gladstone 24-9. Ellie Hainault and Lexi Burns each had three hits for the Gremlins.
- Houghton downed Jeffers 4-1. Burns had two hits and drove in two runs. Hainalut struck out nine over six innings, allowing a run on six hits.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Gladstone 4-3 – just the second loss of the season for the Lakes. Addy Sanville scored the game-winning run when she tripled in the bottom of the seventh, and came home on a Lakes’ error. Goldsworthy added three more hits, but took the loss in the circle.
In girls soccer…
- Houghton blanked Sault Ste. Marie 2-0.
NBA
The Pistons and Cavaliers will decide their Eastern Conference semifinal series with a seventh game tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift. The winner will take on the Knicks for the Eastern Conference title.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs Saturday…
- The Sabres routed the Canadiens 8-3. That Eastern Conference second-round series is tied 3-3, and will be decided tomorrow.
MLB
Daulton Varsho’s single off Tyler Holton in the top of the 10th inning gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 victory over the Tigers Saturday. Casey Mize was sharp in his return from the injured list, allowing just two hits over six shutout innings. Matt Vierling’s homer accounted for Detroit’s only run.
The Tigers host the Blue Jays again today. Jack Flaherty will start against Kevin Gausman. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
To make room for Mize on the roster, Brenan Hanifee was returned to Toledo.
Jackson Chourio homered, as the Brewers shaded the Twins 2-1. Logan Henderson scattered six hits over five innings, but allowed just one run and got the win. Chad Patrick earned a four-inning save, allowing just one hit.
The Brewers visit the Twins again today. Robert Gasser will come up from Nashville to start against Bailey Ober.
Coleman Crow was sent back down to Nashville after making one start with the Brewers. Peter Strzelecki was called up.
Starter Quinn Priester continues to struggle to recover from thoracic outlet syndrome. His initial rehab assignment was cut short. He tried again yesterday with Milwaukee’s High-A Wisconsin farm team, and gave up five hits on seven runs, while retiring only four batters.
