A local art gallery highlights a local artist during May. Tomorrow evening the Finlandia Art Gallery will host an opening reception for Bonnie Loukus’ “Liminal Sanctuaries” exhibit.
Loukus grew up in Laurium and attended Finlandia University before beginning an artist’s career and picking up skills to work in a variety of mediums. “Liminal Sanctuaries” is Loukus’ latest collection of oil paintings that focus on solitary animals surrounded by an incorporeal environment. The paintings find the animals in spaces far away from human influence.
Loukus says as a multidisciplinary artist, focusing on oil painting she was able to explore her own transition in life through observing animals. Loukus is an exceptional artist who has been invited to participate in artist-in-residency programs in Estonia, Isle Royale National Park and Silver Island.
Loukus also supports the local artist community as the executive director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center. Those interested in attending the opening reception for “Liminal Sanctuaries” can find details online. The exhibit will remain on display at the Finlandia Art Gallery until June 10.
