GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers retained the Kohlman Cup with a 10-3 thrashing of the Eagle River Falcons in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament title game yesterday. Portage Lake took control early, and scored the first six goals of the game. Spencer Donnelly, Alex Broetzman and Landon Stevens each scored twice, Zach Hill had a goal and three assists, Matt Marchel and Austin Mikesch each had a goal and two assists, and Ross Rouleau scored once. Camden Burggrabe made 44 saves. It’s the second straight year the Pioneers have won the Don Kohlman Cup, and the third straight year they claimed the Magnusson Cup as regular-season champions.
The hockey season closes later this week, as the Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines face off in the annual Gibson Cup tournament. Game one will be staged Thursday at Dee Stadium… game two Friday at the Colosseum… and game three, if needed, Saturday at the Dee. Faceoff for each game is at 7:30. Coverage will begin around 7:15 on KBear 102.3.
College Hockey
In quarterfinal play at the NCAA Division I hockey tournament yesterday…
- Denver ousted defending champion Western Michigan 6-2.
- Michigan shaded Minnesota-Duluth 4-3.
That sets up the Frozen Four. Michigan will face Denver in one semifinal April 9th. North Dakota and Wisconsin will meet in the other semifinal.
College Basketball
The Final Four is set for the Division I NCAA men’s basketball tournament, as well.
In quarterfinals yesterday…
- Michigan smothered Tennessee 95-62.
- Connecticut edged Duke 73-72.
Semifinals will be played Saturday, with Michigan facing Arizona, and Connecticut taking on Illinois.
The first two teams in the women’s final four were set yesterday…
- Connecticut outscored Notre Dame 70-52.
- UCLA dispatched Duke 70-58.
The remaining slots will be decided today…
- South Carolina will face TCU.
- Michigan takes on Texas.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Penguins tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Thunder tonight.
The Bucks’ slide continued with a 127-113 loss to the Clippers yesterday afternoon. Gary Trent, Junior, scored 36.
The Bucks have lost 14 of their last 17 games, and host the Mavericks tomorrow night.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Arizona tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Michael Soroka. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers completed a sweep of their series against the White Sox with a 9-7 comeback win yesterday. All of Chicago’s runs came in the first three innings off Milwaukee starter Brandon Sproat. Gary Sánchez hit a two-run homer for the Brewers in the first inning. The Crew exploded for six runs in the eighth, powered by a three-run pinch-hit homer by Christian Yelich.
The Brewers welcome the Rays tonight. Kyle Harrison will pitch against Nick Martinez.
