High School
The Houghton High School hockey team claimed the Division Three state championship with a 5-2 victory over Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s on Saturday. Jack Sayen tied a state tournament record with four goals. His first, on a power play, gave the Gremlins an early lead in the first period. The Eaglets scored two straight, but Sayen tied it a little over three minutes into the third frame, then netted the game-winner two-and-a-half minutes later. Connor Arko added an insurance tally, and Sayen’s fourth goal with three-and-a-half minutes remaining sealed the title. Cooper Flachs made 28 saves to earn the win in net. Arko assisted on each of Sayen’s goals, and Noah Maillette had three assists.
A welcome home ceremony has been scheduled for 6:30 today at the Houghton High School gym.
Junior Hockey
At the 18U Tier III junior hockey state tournament at the Colosseum Saturday…

- Jim’s Pizza defeated the Lansing Spartans 4-2.
- Ontonagon’s Fighting Miners outskated the Howell Cougars 6-2.
- Jim’s Pizza stopped the Cougars 8-2.
- The Spartans downed the Fighting Miners 8-2.

College Hockey
The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team advanced to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament semifinals with a 3-2 victory over Bowling Green Saturday night. Goals by Stiven Sardarian and Lauri Raiman staked the Huskies to a 2-0 lead. The Falcons narrowed the gap with a goal late in the third period. Luca Fasciano’s empty-netter with a minute remaining provided some insurance, and became the game-winner when Bowling Green forced in a shot 33 seconds later. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 38 saves.
Augustana and Saint Thomas also moved into the semifinals with victories last night. Ferris State shaded top-seed Minnesota State 2-1 last evening to tie that series. It will be decided tonight. Semifinal pairings will be announced after tonight’s game.
College Basketball
The 15th-ranked Michigan Tech men’s basketball team fell to 25th-ranked Grand Valley State 82-70 in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament Saturday. Marcus Tomashek led the Huskies with 13 points. MTU finishes the season with a record of 26-6.
17th-ranked Northern Michigan University advanced to the GLIAC championship game with a 79-67 victory over Lake Superior State. Dylan Kuehl scored 25 for the Wildcats.
Northern will host Grand Valley in the title match this afternoon at 2:00.
On the women’s side, 21st-ranked Northern Michigan fell to second-ranked and top-seeded Grand Valley 66-38 in their semifinal match in Allendale Saturday. Allysa Hill led the Wildcats with 12 points. NMU closes its season with a record of 25-7.
Grand Valley and Ferris State will vie for the championship this afternoon.
NCAA tournament pairing will be announced late tonight.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines concluded their regular season with a 6-5 loss to the Mosinee Papermakers Saturday night.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Devils tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Dylan Larkin will miss today’s game after injuring a knee in Friday’s loss to the Senators. He’s considered day-to-day, pending a more extensive evaluation.
NBA
The Pistons dropped a tight 107-105 game to the lowly Nets Saturday night. With Cade Cunningham being rested for the game, Tobias Harris led Detroit with 18 points.
The Pistons have lost three straight, and will visit the Heat tonight.
The Bucks picked up a 113-99 victory over the Jazz Saturday night. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 27.
The Bucks host the Magic this evening.
MLB
The Tigers lost to the Pirates 5-3 in a Grapefruit League game Saturday. Casey Mize pitched into the fourth inning, and gave up three runs on four hits. Austin Slater drove in two runs with a ground-rule double.
The Tigers face a split Blue Jays squad this afternoon. Bryan Sammons will start for Detroit.
The Brewers stopped a split Angels squad 8-1 in Cactus League play Saturday. Brandon Woodruff pitched two scoreless innings.
The Brewers will take on the Mariners this afternoon.
Nordic Skiing
At the Great Bear Chase at the Swedetown Trails on Saturday…
- In the 52k Skiathlon, Caden Albrecht of Houghton took the title, with Maxime Maronde-Gusev of Chicago second. Erica O’Hearn of Traverse City won the women’s crown.
- In the 52k Classic, Ivar Dragerengen of Green Bay finished first, 17 minutes ahead of Andrew Tilman of Minneapolis. Lizzie Sonnefelt of Green Bay was the fastest woman, and finished third overall.
- In the 52k Freestyle, Mitchell Campbell of Minneapolis nosed out Sam Shaheen, also of Minneapolis, by five seconds to take the title. Melanie Hammerbeck of Green Bay won the women’s title.
- In the 24k Classic, Kane Straka from Netosha, Wisconsin, was the winner. Bonnie Weiskopf of Stillwater, Minnesota, finished second overall, and first in the women’s division.
- In the 24k Freestyle, Elliott Isaacson of Mohawk claimed the crown. Nicholas Johnkoski of Wausau was second, and Christine Reinhart of Milwaukee was the fastest woman.
- In the 10k Classic, Illya Velat from Chassell finished two seconds ahead of Vincent Gemelli of Hancock. Liza Lindsay of Marquette was the top woman.
- In the 10k Freestyle, Gideon Talbot of Atlantic Mine claimed the title, a scant one second ahead of Liam Schoeller of Wakefield. Ava Polkinghorne of Marquette won the women’s crown.
