High School
In girls district semifinals last night…
- Division Four, District 97 – Ewen-Trout Creek smothered Bessemer 71-8. Wakefield-Marenisco dispatched Ontonagon 58-29. The Panthers and Cardinals will play for the district title tomorrow at 6:00 at Ewen-Trout Creek.
- Division Four, District 98 – Baraga outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 85-60. L’Anse got past Hancock 44-40. The Vikings and Purple Hornets will play for the district crown tomorrow at 6:00 at Baraga.
- Division Four, District 99 – Norway dispatched North Central 54-41. Forest Park’s season ended with a 50-40 loss to North Dickinson. The Knights will host the Nordics tomorrow.
- Division Three, District 65 – Calumet surged ahead early, and cruised to a 69-44 victory over West Iron County. The Copper Kings led 45-15 at halftime, and used their reserves for most of the second half. Bailey Strom and Kiirsi Johnson each scored 19 points for Calumet. Lily DeSousa led the Wykons with 12 points. Jeffers fell to Westwood 48-38 in the other semifinal. The Copper Kings will host the Patriots tomorrow at 6:00. - Division Two, District 33 – Houghton’s season ended with a 50-32 loss at Negaunee. The Gremlins fell behind early, and didn’t hit their first shot from the field until nearly two minutes into the second quarter. A 17-5 run by the Miners early in the second half put the game away. Ellie Hainault and Mia Lawson each scored nine for Houghton. Claire O’Donnell had 15 for Negaunee, and Paige O’Donnell added 13. The Miners will host Gladstone in the District championship game. The Braves shaded Kingsford 42-41.
Ishpeming claimed the top two spots on this year’s WestPAC Girls All-Conference roster. Jenessa Eagle of the Hematites was named Player of the Year, and Mya Hemmer Defensive Player of the Year. Negaunee’s Mike O’Donnell was honored as Coach of the Year.
Local members of the All-Conference Dream Team include Ellie Hainault from Houghton and Emery Chynoweth from Hancock.
Copper Country Division First Team honorees include Alecia Aho from Hancock. Bailey Strom from Calumet, Bristol Shamion from West Iron County, Mia Nordstrom from Jeffers and Ruby Zawada from Houghton.
Strom, Chynoweth and Houghton’s Romi Mattson were among those named to the All-Defensive Team.
Copper Country Honorable Mention votes went to Isabel Rajala from Jeffers, Jacey Sleeman from Houghton, Kiirsi Johnson from Calumet, Lacey Shamion from West Iron County, and Lydia Pelli from Hancock.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will play for the Division Four Region 25 championship tonight. The Blue Bolts will face North Dickinson at 7:00 at Negaunee High School.

College Basketball
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament opened last night.
On the women’s side…
- Fifth-seed Michigan Tech fell at fourth-seed Northern Michigan 74-66, despite a career-best 30 points from Ella Mason. Sydney Whitehouse scored 24 for the Wildcats. Northern will face top-seed Grand Valley in a semifinal game Saturday in Allendale. Ferris State and Wayne State will play in the other semifinal.
On the men’s side…
- Second-seed Michigan Tech held off Davenport 72-70. Dawson Nordgaard paced the Huskies with 17 points.
- Top-seed Northern Michigan routed Ferris State 91-62. Dylan Kuehl led a balanced Wildcats attack with 17 points.
Northern will host the remainder of the tournament this weekend. The Huskies will play third-seed Grand Valley in one semifinal at 4:30. The Wildcats will face fourth-seed Lake Superior State in the other.
NHL
The Red Wings suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to the Golden Knights last night. Goals by Emmitt Finnie, Simon Edvinsson and Alex DeBrincat gave Detroit a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Vegas was able to tie the game, and Tomas Hertl’s wrister won it in overtime. Cam Talbot made 21 saves.
The Wings host the Panthers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Goalie John Gibson sat out last night’s game after suffering an upper-body injury Monday. He’s considered day-to-day. Sebastian Cossa was brought up from Grand Rapids to back up Talbot.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Spurs tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 the Lift.
The Bucks fell to the Hawks 131-113 last night. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 24 points for Milwaukee.
The Bucks entertain the Jazz Saturday.
MLB
Half of the Tigers shaded the Panama World Baseball Classic team 2-1 yesterday. Kerry Carpenter homered. Jack Flaherty gave up two hits over three scoreless innings.
The other half of the Tigers played the Dominican Republic WBC team to a 4-4 tie in Santo Domingo.
The Tigers have today off, and face the Red Sox tomorrow. Justin Verlander is scheduled to start for Detroit.
Tigers television voice Jason Benetti will become the lead announcer for NBC’s Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts this season. Benetti had previously called national broadcasts for FOX Sports. He will continue with the Tigers, with radio broadcaster Dan Dickerson moving to the television booth on Sundays.
The Brewers lost 4-1 to the Cubs yesterday. Christian Yelich homered.
The Brewers face the Rockies today. Robert Gasser will start.
