High School
Houghton erupted for seven goals in the first period, and blew past Calumet 9-1 to win the Division Three, Region 17 hockey title last night. Gunner Gullstrand and Jack Sayen each scored twice in the first half of the period. Brody Donnelly, Braden Kari and Conner Arko increase the lead. Calumet’s Sawyer Garrow scored the only goal of the second period. Arko added his second goal of the game in the third period, and Gage Gullstrand also found the net. Donnelly was credited with four assists. Cooper Flachs earned the win in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Copper Kings 34-14.
The winner will face Marquette in the state quarterfinal game Saturday at 6:00 at the Berry Events Center at Northern Michigan University. The Sentinels dispatched Escanaba 3-1 to win their regional title last night. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97-7 The Wolf.

- Division Four, District 97 at Bessemer – Bessemer overpowered Ewen-Trout 42-17. Wakefield-Marenisco dispatched Ontonagon 52-42. The Speedboys and Cardinals will play for the title tomorrow at Bessemer.
- Division Four, District 98 – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City advanced with a 71-28 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell. Baraga shaded L’Anse 46-44. The Blue Bolts will host the Vikings in the title match tomorrow at 6:00.
- DivisionFour, District 99 – Forest Park ousted North Central 80-38. Norway eliminated Stephenson 57-35. The Trojans will host the Knights in the title game tomorrow night.
- Division Three, District 65 – Jeffers’ season ended with a 79-54 loss at Westwood. West Iron County outscored Ironwood 45-37. The Wykons and Patriots will tip off for the district title tomorrow at 6 at Westwood.
- Division Two, District 33 – Kingsford shut down Houghton 59-25. Alex Hebert led the Gremlins with nine points. Gladstone advanced with a tight 58-55 overtime win over Negaunee. The Flivvers and Braves will play for the district crown tomorrow in Kingsford.
Westwood swept the top honors as the WestPAC All-Conference roster was released yesterday. Ethan Marta of the Patriots was named Player of the Year, Jacob Ridl Defensive Player of the Year, and Luke Gray Coach of the Year.
Local members of the All-Conference Dream Team include Houghton’s Terry Nolan and Jeffers’ Landon Larson. The Copper Division First Team includes Alex Hebert from Houghton, Peter Torola from Calumet, Levi Kinnunen from Jeffers, Gage Chynoweth from Hancock and Seth Oberlin from West Iron County. Copper Division Honorable Mentions include Jack Cooke from Houghton, John Golus from Calumet, Levi Kinnunen from Jeffers, Jessiah Smith from West Iron County, and Isaac Wanhala from Hancock. NBA
The Pistons bounced back from Monday’s loss, and quieted the Thunder 124-116 last night. Jalen Duren had 29 points and 15 rebounds. Cade Cunningham had 29 points and 13 assists.

The Bucks squeaked past the Cavaliers 118-116 last night. Kevin Porter, Jr. scored 20 points, and sank the winning shot from 15 feet out with 20 seconds remaining.
The Bucks welcome the Knicks tomorrow.
MLB
The Tigers’ spring struggles continued yesterday. Half of the team played to a 4-4 tie with the Bule Jays. Thayron Liranzo hit a three-run homer. Casey Mize gave up just one hit over two scoreless innings. Will Vest was touched for three runs. The other half of the Tigers lost 5-3 to the Phillies. Brett Callahan hit a late home run. Ty Madden opened with two perfect innings.
The Tigers will face the Orioles this afternoon. Keider Montero will start for Detroit.
The Brewers outslugged the Giants 13-12 yesterday. Brice Turang hit two home runs, including a grand slam.
The Brewers face the Rangers today.
