Winter storms can arrive quickly in the Keweenaw Peninsula and linger over the area.
A winter storm today will bring mixed precipitation, heavy snow and strong winds to the Upper Peninsula. The National Weather Service warns the Keweenaw region could experience wind gusts between 35 and 50 mph near the lakeshore, which may damage trees and cause sporadic power outages.
These weather conditions will likely make travel difficult with limited visibility. Drivers should travel at speeds conditions allow and anticipate turns in the road. Motorists should remain a safe distance behind plow trucks and watch for snow or debris in the roadway.
If involved in an accident, remain calm and contact law enforcement or a tow service if necessary. Keep a shovel, snow brush, cat litter and first aid kit in your vehicle. Consider keeping additional clothing, bottled water and non-perishable snacks in your car.
The winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday. High elevation areas may experience higher snow accumulation and stronger wind gusts.
