High School
Lake Linden-Hubbell advanced to the Division Two eight-player football regional tournament final with a 50-28 victory over North Central Saturday. Each team scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter. The Lakes took control with three more touchdowns in the second quarter, and led 36-22 at halftime. Brady Axford rushed for 208 yards on 23 carries with 4 touchdowns, and a pair of two-point conversions. He completed 5 of 11 passes for 89 yards, an additional touchdown, and another two-point conversion. Josh Daavettila ran for 129 yards on 17 attempts for 2 touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
The Lakes will play at North Dickinson Saturday afternoon. The Nordics defeated the Lakes 38-34 in week one, and are unbeaten. They advanced by dispatching Saint Ignace 40-22.
In 11-Player Division Six, Calumet’s season ended with a 41-14 loss at Kingsley Saturday, in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. The Copper Kings trailed 20-14 at the end of the third quarter, but the Stags scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, added a 50-yard scoring drive midway through the quarter, and cemented their lead when Colton Goethals returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown with four minutes remaining. After giving up a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, Calumet drove 66 yards in 7 plays, with Tyler Halonen scoring on a 9-yard run. A Ben Anderson extra point kick gave the Kings their only lead of the game, at 7-6. Kingsley added two touchdowns, and led 20-7 at halftime. Calumet opened the second half with a 63-yard scoring drive, all on the legs of Halonen, who capped it with a 40-yard touchdown jaunt. The Kings could get no closer, though, and closed their season with a record of 7-3. Kingsley will face Traverse City Saint Francis in the district title game next weekend.
In 11-Player Division Eight Friday, L’Anse fell at Iron Mountain 31-15. Bark River-Harris spotted West Iron County an early touchdown, then steamrolled the Wykons 54-6. The Mountaineers and Broncos will meet for the district crown next weekend.
In other games involving U.P. teams…
- In Division Three, Gaylord eliminated Marquette 38-34 Friday evening. Mount Pleasant downed Bay City Western 34-14 in the other semifinal.
- In Division Four, Escanaba got past Freeland 17-13 Saturday. The Eskymoes will host Big Rapids for a district title next Saturday.
- In Division Five, Negaunee fell to Ogemaw Heights 29-28 in overtime Friday. Saturday, Kingsford smothered Gladwin 26-6. The Flivvers will travel to West Branch to play for a district title Saturday.
- In Division Seven Friday, Menominee pounded Manton 48-17, and McBain shaded Charlevoix 28-27. The Maroons will host the Ramblers in the district title game Saturday.
- In eight-player Division One, Norway dispatched Gogebic 60-32. Pickford got past Inland Lakes 30-26. The Knights and Panthers will meet for the regional title next weekend.

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team blanked Clarkson 3-0 Saturday night. Owen Bartoszkiewicz stopped 28 shots to get the win in net. Isaac Gordon scored the eventual game-winner early in the contest. Max Koskipirtti’s third-period goal added some breathing room, and Kalem Parker’s empty-netter sealed the win.
Augustana waited until the third period to do all of their scoring in a 3-1 victory over the Northern hockey squad Saturday. Tobias Pitka scored the Wildcats’ lone goal.
College Volleyball
The Tech volleyball team swept Roosevelt 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-23) in Chicago on Saturday. Rachel Zurek had 13 kills, Maddy Kreider had 36 assists, and Brooke Dzwik notched 14 digs.
The NMU volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-16) at Parkside Saturday. McKenzie Gruner tallied 12 kills.
College Soccer
The MTU women’s soccer team will host Roosevelt today.
The NMU women’s soccer team will entertain Parkside today.
The NMU men’s soccer team welcomes Purdue Northwest today.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team turned up the heat in the second half Saturday, and blew out Roosevelt 56-31. The Huskies trailed by three at halfime, but outscored the Lakers 35-7 after the intermission. Nic Nora ran for three touchdowns for the Huskies. In his first start, freshman quarterback Elliott Larner ran for one touchdown, and completed a pass to Ethan Champney for another.
The Northern football team lost 70-35 at top-ranked Ferris State Saturday. Redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Theuerkauf threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and added 42 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground.
College Basketball
The 13th-ranked Michigan Tech men’s basketball team opened its season by upending third-ranked Dallas Baptist 75-50 in overtime at the Small College Basketball Classic in Lakeland, Florida Saturday. Marcus Tomashek scored 26 for the Huskies, who will face Lenoir-Rhyne today.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Sharks tonight. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Pistons outscored the Mavericks 122-110 in Mexico City Saturday night. Jalen Duren led Detroit with 33 points and 10 rebounds. Cade Cunningham scored 21 points, and added 18 assists.
The Pistons visit the Grizzlies tomorrow. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 7:35 on KBear 102.3.
The Bucks dropped a tough 135-133 decision to the Kings Saturday afternoon. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Milwaukee plays at Indiana tomorrow.
MLB
The Dodgers came from behind to edge the Blue Jays 5-4 in 11 innings last night, and win their second straight World Series title. Will Smith’s homer in the top of the inning provided the winning margin, and L.A. turned a timely double play to end a Toronto threat in the bottom of the inning, securing the win. Miguel Rojas had forced the extra innings with a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the ninth. The Jays loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but couldn’t score.
NFL
The Lions host the Vikings in a 1:00 game this afternoon, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers welcome the Panthers for a 1:00 game today.
The Seahawks visit the Commanders tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
