High School
In high school football Saturday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell routed Ironwood 64-28. Josh Daavettila ran for 225 yards on 12 attempts, and scored four touchdowns and two two-point conversions. Brady Axford completed 3 of 5 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown, and ran for 54 yards on six carries for another touchdown and a pair of two-point conversions. Ashton Sullivan ran for two touchdowns, and Tobin Baril added another.
In high school volleyball today, Calumet will compete against Marquette, Kingsford and Forest Park at the Clash of the Divisions Quad meet at Kingsford.
Jeffers, L’Anse and Forest Park claimed team titles at the U.P. Championships Saturday at Munising.
In Division Three…
- The Trojan boys used a team effort to outpoint Saint Ignace. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed fourth, and Chassell 11th. William Hoffman paced the Trojans with an eighth-place individual finish. Three teammates also finished in the top-20 out of 88 runners. Niko Reed of the Blue Bolts placed 12th. See full results here.
- The Purple Hornets girls easily outdistanced runner-up Ewen-Trout Creek. Chassell finished eighth, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 10th. Lily Froese logged a fifth-place finish for L’Anse, with Kwynn Voskuhl eighth and Princess Pierre 14th. Ewen’s Bree Besonen finished sixth. See full results here.
In Division Two…
- Jeffers placed six runners in the boys’ top 11 to outscore Rudyard. Hancock finished eighth. Cameron Anderson and Landon Larson claimed the top two positions, with Branson Anderson fourth, Blake Heltunen sixth, Kasen Helminan 10th, and Tage Rajala 11th. See full results here.
- The Hancock girls finished second to Rudyard. Jill Berg had a third-place finish, and Lydia Pelli was fifth. Jeffers didn’t have enough runners to qualify for team competition, but Remi Coponen placed fourth individually, and Clare Heltunen sixth. See full results here.

- The Houghton boys finished third. Benjamin Hemmer placed seventh individually. See full results here.
- The Houghton girls also came in third, with Calumet fifth. Holly Cooke and Sela Niska of the Gremlins finished fourth and fifth. See full results here.
At the Clash of the Divisions volleyball quad at Kingsford Saturday, Calumet fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-21) to Forest Park, and defeated Marquette 3-0 (25-14, 25-25, 25-25) and the host Flivvers 3-1 (9-25, 25-23, 29-27, 25-22). The Trojans swept their matches, downing Marquette 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14) and Kingsford 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-21).

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team settled for a split in Fairbanks, after falling 5-1 to the University of Alaska Saturday night. Tyler Miller scored the Huskies’ only goal. Max Vayrynen stopped 30 shots in net for the Huskies, but took the loss.
The Northern Michigan hockey squad dropped a 5-2 decision to 19th-ranked Colorado College Saturday evening. Mathew Ward and Tobias Pitka each scored their first collegiate goals for the Wildcats. William Gramme suffered the loss in net, stopping 24 of 29 shots.
College Volleyball
Both the Tech and Northern volleyball teams wrapped up play in Hammond, Indiana at the Midwest Regional Crossover Saturday…
- The Huskies lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 27-25) to Walsh. Jacqueline Yancy had 13 kills, Avery Brown logged 27 assists and 12 digs, and Julia Fledderjohn had 14 digs.
- The Wildcats shut down Ashland 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-13). Madison York tallied 15 kills, and Allie Barlow had 38 assists and 10 digs.
College Football
The Tech football team fell behind early, and lost to top-ranked Ferris State 38-10 Saturday. The Huskies did break the Bulldogs’ string of three consecutive shutouts when Avery Kucharski kicked a 32-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Tech finally found the endzone with an Elliott Larner one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.
Northern snapped its 28-game losing streak in powerful fashion with a 42-21 victory at Roosevelt University Saturday. The Wildcats rushed for a school record 538 yards, with Noah Dobert totaling 243 yards and three touchdowns and Jahi Wood adding 233 yards and two scores – just the seventh time in NCAA Division II history that two backs from the same team have surpassed 200 yards in a single game. NMU attempted just one pass. It was Northern’s first win since they closed the 2022 season by defeating Lake Erie College.
College Soccer
The MTU women’s soccer team plays at Saginaw Valley State today.
