On Saturday the parade of nations will take over downtown Houghton. Students and RSOs, will line up near the Van Pelt and Opie Library on campus. The parade route will march down College Avenue before ending at the Dee Stadium. City of Houghton police chief john Donnelly says the department will re-route traffic, starting near Macinnis drive. Traffic will flow to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge by jogging around downtown via Sharon Avenue.
Public Works has to do the heavy lifting to set up the detour. You’ll see detour signs out on Friday in preparation of the morning. We won’t start seeing law enforcement presence until about 10 am. With the parade starting at 11am. But as far as impacts on traffic won’t be until 10:45 am. And that parade doesn’t go as long. I know they’re planning on eating at the dee stadium. Parade of nations begins at 11 am on Saturday. Officials suggest parade goers plan on getting to Houghton early to park and walk to Sheldon and college avenues. There is no parking in downtown Houghton during the event. Following the parade the community gathers at the dee stadium to share a meal made by several international students’ organizations.
