MTU Public Safety is looking into vandalism of the 9/11 memorial on campus. On Thursday morning the Young Americans for Freedom group, that places an annual memorial comprised of American Flags on Walker Lawn, found nearly a third of the memorial was missing close to 900 flags of the 2,977. According to a report published by the Mining Gazette the flags were later found in a nearby trash bin. In a statement by the university, officials say they are aware of the situation, and the public safety department is investigating the vandalism.
We are aware of the American flags on Walker Lawn stolen early this morning from the memorial tribute to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack. This act of vandalism on a symbol meant to unite us all is deeply disappointing. We are working to identify those who committed the vandalism and will hold them responsible for their actions.
