College Football
Michigan Tech quarterback Alex Bueno has been named Week Zero GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. In his first career quarterback start, Bueno led the Huskies to their first victory over a nationally-ranked team in six years, 37-17 over 16th-rated Bemidji State. Bueno rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown, and passed for 188 yards and two scores.
MLB
The Tigers dropped a 10-8 slugfest to the Mets yesterday. Charlie Morton left in the fourth inning, and was charged with five runs on eight hits. Drew Sommers gave up three runs in the sixth, and took the loss. Jahmai Jones had four hits, including a lead-off first-pitch home run. Wenceel Pérez also homered. Juan Soto hit a grand slam and drove in six runs for New York.
The Tigers host the Mets again tonight. Sawyer Gipson-Long will start against Nolan McLean. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has brought outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and pitcher Chase Lee back up from Toledo.
The Brewers couldn’t hold an early four-run lead, and fell to the Phillies 10-8 yesterday. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin homered. The game went down to the wire, with Philly scoring two runs off Abner Uribe in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
The Brewers have today off, and welcome the Phillies again tomorrow evening. Jose Quintana will pitch against Aaron Nola.
Milwaukee reliever Shelby Miller left yesterday’s game after feeling a “pop” in his elbow. He’ll be examined today.
The Brewers have activated shortstop Joey Ortiz from the injured list, and also recalled pitcher Craig Yoho from Nashville. Infielder Oliver Dunn was sent down.
NFL
Newly-acquired Packers’ linebacker Micah Parsons is suffering from a strained back, and may not be available for Sunday’s season-opener against the Lions. Team officials say he may be able to play, if given an injection to numb the pain.
