While many people enjoyed a day on the boat. A couple hundred people celebrated Labor Day and labor movements at the waterfront pier. The labor day rally; workers over billionaires, brought many people together to share how unions have impacted the nation, and the communities of the copper country. Keweenaw indivisible organizer Richard Canevez says today remembers the long fight for workers’ rights and keeps that momentum moving forward into the future.
way that they had to be fought for in the past, we have to fight for them now, under threat. So, we celebrate the traditions, and we honor the history that has preceded us, but we also speak to the commitment now that says for us. So, we gather here today to celebrate not just that commitment, not just that history too, but each other. We are here to be a community, to be able to connect with one another, to enjoy this wonderful day before everyone goes off to enjoy Labor Day as however, they wish to enjoy it. Keweenaw indivisible, save our parks, the Houghton County democrats brought informational flyers, and passed around various petitions for attendees to check out. The day was also included by music from local musicians, and several speakers to address the crowd. Speeches ranged from supporting parks recreation workers with the national parks and forests, personal stories of growing up in a union family when Calumet-Hecla Company left the negotiating table in 1968 and closed the last of the Keweenaw’s copper mines, and former teachers sharing their experience taken in by the teachers union and protected when medical conditions put her position at risk.
