In high school volleyball yesterday…

- Lake Linden-Hubbell won the season-opening Copper Mountain Conference Tournament, besting Baraga 25-14 in the championship match. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse, Wakefield-Marenisco, Ontonagon. Bessemer, Ironwood, and Watersmeet also took part. For the day, Cleo Milkey had 22 kills and 7 aces for the Lakes. Ashlyn Steves had 10 aces and 45 digs. Emily Burnham had 11 kills, 8 aces and 3 blocks.
Today…
- Houghton, Hancock and West Iron County compete at the Kingsford Tournament.
- Forest Park plays at a tournament at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
MLB
The Tigers spotted the Royals a 3-0 lead, then roared back to claim a 7-5 victory last evening. Casey Mize gave up the three early runs, then settled down and pitched into the sixth. Homers by Zach McKinstry and Riley Greene tied the game, and Detroit built a four-run lead until K-C scored two off Will Vest in the top of the ninth. Greene’s homer was his 30th of the season. McKinstry finished a double shy of a cycle.
The Tigers have won 11 of their last 14 games, and host the Royals again tonight. Chris Paddack will start against Michael Wacha. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Lefty reliever Drew Sommers made a brief Major League debut last night, after he was brought up from Toledo. To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Ryan Kreidler was designated for assignment. To open a space on the 25-man roster, Alex Lange was sent down to the Mud Hens.
William Contreras’ solo home run with two out in the bottom of the ninth gave the Brewers a 5-4 walk-off win against the Blue Jays. Contreras also had an RBI double. Jose Quintana poitched into the sixth, and gave up two runs on two hits. Trevor Megill blew a save opportunity when he allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but also earned the win.
The Brewers will visit the Blue Jays again tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Logan Webb.
Milwaukee has placed Joey Ortiz on the injured list with a strained hamstring. Jake Bauers was activated off the injured list.
NFL
The Lions conclude their preseason campaign at home against the Texans today. Coverage will begin at noon on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers wrap up their exhibition campaign by hosting the Seahawks in a 4:00 game today.
NBA
Former Piston Malik Beasley has been cleared in an FBI gambling probe. Beasley is a free agent. The Pistons had hoped to re-sign him, but moved on when the investigation began. Beasley isn’t out of the woods, yet. He’s been evicted from his apartment, and is being sued for not paying his rent.
