Fast Pitch Softball
Finnish Coat claimed the Holly McCullah Memorial Trophy as champions of the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League, after defeating Northern Wishes 14-4 in last night’s tournament title game. Josie Switzer was the winning pitcher. Larissa Peterson took the loss, with Rosalie Kangas coming in as relief. For Finnish Coat, Lena Myhren had a double and two singles, and Ann Hardin had a home run and a double. For Northern Wishes, Meg Ruohonen and Larissa Peterson each had a single.

MLB
The Tigers shut down the Diamondbacks 7-2 yesterday. Chris Paddack was effective in his Detroit debut, giving up a run over six innings. Jake Rogers homered, and Kerry Carpenter had a home run and an RBI triple.
After their mid-July swoon, the Tigers have won four straight. They’ll take today off, and visit the Phillies tomorrow night. Jack Flaherty will pitch against Ranger Suárez. Coverage will begin at 6:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers have added some bullpen depth by trading for Braves’ reliever Rafael Montero. Atlanta gets infield prospect Jim Jarvis in return. Jarvis had been on the roster of Detroit’s Double-A Erie farm team. In 39 appearances this season, Montero is 0-1, with a 5.40 earned run average.
Detroit’s options for a stronger arm at the back of the bullpen dimmed yesterday, as the Cardinals traded Ryan Helsley to the Mets. Twins’ closer Jhoan Duran was recently traded to the Phillies.
The Brewers’ three-game win streak ended with a 10-3 loss to the Cubs yesterday. Freddy Peralta struggled, allowing five runs over four innings. William Contreras hit two home runs.
The Brewers will also take today off, and visit the Nationals tomorrow evening. Jose Quintana will pitch against Mitchell Parker.
The baseball trade deadline is today at 6 pm.
NFL
The NFL preseason opens tonight, as the Lions take on the Chargers in the annual Hall of Fame Game. Coverage will begin at 7 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.
