Back-to-school season is fast approaching. Many parents may feel some anxiety as they look over their student’s school supplies list. Not to mention the price tag that comes along with a new calculator, boxes of pencils, and new clothes.
Well, last year there were 90 families. But 203 children were involved in getting a backpack. We started about three years ago; we started being very organized in keeping track of how many students. So, the first year we had about 100, then the next year about 130. And then last year, 203. This year, we already have more than 250 children signed up. – Lois Jambekar, volunteer, Copper Country Angel Mission
To help families in the Copper Country make sure their students are prepared for the start of school with the tools they’ll need, the Copper Country Angel Mission and the Salvation Army plan to partner to reach more children and families in the community.
I mean, we had people from Houghton, and we had them from Dollar Bay and Lake Linda, but we didn’t have them from Castle or south of there. And I think the Salvation Army did. They helped people in that area. So we want to help as many people as we can. – Lois Jambekar, volunteer, Copper Country Angel Mission
Each year, Walmart has helped the Stuff a Bus campaign by donating a supply of backpacks and some other items. Those interested in donating items such as scissors, colored markers, calculators, toiletries, or other items can stop by Walmart in Houghton to stuff the bus.
We do quite well with spiral notebooks, some obscure things, like even water bottles or toothbrushes, and toothpaste, we like to give every child. We think it’s very important. – Lois Jambekar, volunteer, Copper Country Angel Mission
Donations after Saturday can be dropped off at the Salvation Army or Copper Country Angel Mission. Families that need to register their students should contact the CCAM or the Salvation Army for more information. Applications can be found at c-c-angel-mission-dot-org.
Stuff a Bus will run from 9 am to 5 pm August 1st and 2nd at the Walmart in Houghton to support the Backpack Program partnership with the Copper Country Angel Mission and Salvation Army.
