MLB
The Tigers’ five-game winning streak ended with a 7-3 loss to the Rays yesterday. Reese Olson turned in a creditable start, allowing two runs in the first inning, but no more before leaving after the fifth. Detroit was on top, at that point, after a three-run fourth inning, powered by a Zack McKinstry double. Tampa Bay broke the game open with four runs off Brant Hurter and Chase Lee in the sixth – all with two outs.
The Tigers take today off, and welcome the Mariners tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
McKinstry was added to the American League All-Star roster yesterday. He’ll replace Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, who’s recovering from a broken rib.
The Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Dodgers with a 3-2 victory yesterday. Milwaukee trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, but Andrew Vaughn’s RBI single tied the contest, and Jackson Chourio singled home Sal Frelick with the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th. Jose Quintana gave up a run over six innings. Trevor Magill earned the win with a scoreless 10th inning, after learning that he’d been added to the National League All-Star roster. He’ll take the place of teammate Freddy Peralta, who is scheduled to start for Milwaukee on Sunday, and won’t be available to pitch in the Summer Classic.
The Brewers are also off today, and host the Nationals tomorrow evening.
The two teams actually completed a trade during yesterday’s game, with the Dodgers sending outfielder Steward Berroa to the Brewers in exchange for cash considerations. L-A had recently designated Berroa for assignment. He’ll be placed with Nashville. To make room on the 40-man roster, Milwaukee designated pitcher Elvin Rodríguez for assignment.
