There’s less than ten days until Canal Run shoots the starting gun. Close to 900 racers participate in the canal run each year. And for the 50th race along the portage lake canal, organizers expect a lot of friends to return. Including many volunteers. Race director Angela Luskin says the race needs 150 volunteers to run smoothly. And with only a few days left, canal run needs around 40 more volunteers.
They are there for visibility. You know, for racers and volunteers to move through that course safely. And they are there to just remind traffic the event is happening. We’re expecting over 900 racers on that course. So it really helps to make our event go off without a hitch. And these volunteers love it. They want those positions. They enjoy the day just as much as our racers and committee. – Angela Luskin, Race Director, Canal Run
Luskin says the Canal Run still needs people at aid stations, a couple of times, and most importantly, road crossing coordinators. During the canal run, organizers will close m-203 with the help of Michigan State Police. During the race, the road will transition to residential traffic. Participants on race day will pick up their race packet from the church of the resurrection, where bus pickup and drop-off take place.
