Keweenaw County Sheriff responds to a fatal hiking accident near the Manganese Falls.
On Saturday around noon, the Keweenaw County Sheriff was dispatched to a location in the Manganese Falls area for a male hiker who fell from a significant height. Officials determined the man was walking along the path when he fell approximately 25 feet off a cliff section of the Manganese Falls. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials do not believe the incident was not suspicious and was an accident. The individual’s family has been notified, and their name has not been released for privacy.
Copper Harbor Fire, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, Michigan DNR State Parks officials, and Calumet Township Fire assisted at the scene. Keweenaw County sheriff reminds visitors and residents to enjoy the outdoors, but always remain cautious when traveling in the backcountry, and know your limits. Many visited areas of the Copper Country do not have reliable cell phone service or limited coverage.
